Some Tips for Choosing a Solar Garden Fountain

May 31, 2009 by: chrisr

Should you purchase a solar garden fountain or a mains powered fountain? They each have their pros and cons but we find that solar garden fountains are much safer with easier maintenance than wired fountains even though they have the drawback of not working so efficiently during the winter months. The panels on solar fountains use photovoltaic cells to collect the sun’s energy during the day to power the pump. Since they require sunlight the pump will reduce speed and the water will stop during the night or if the sky is overcast.

Installing a Solar Garden Fountain

Solar fountains are uncomplicated to set up and the majority will necessitate no difficult installation. Solar fountains may either have panels in the main body or separate panels that may be positioned some distance away. This allows the fountain to be placed in a shady spot while the panels are located where they can gather the sunlight. The separate solar panels can be located on a hard surface, mounted on a wall or tree or on a wooden post planted securely in the ground.

Energy Storage

Nearly all solar panels are not capable of storing power so they cannot be used by night. They will work most effectively on sunny days but on overcast days they will only pump water very slowly or stop pumping completely. For the duration of the winter it is advisable to disconnect the solar panels as during very cold or freezing weather conditions the pump may work when the sun is out and some damage could occur. Some solar fountains may have battery backups to make up for short periods but the majority are really only intended to be used only on sunny days.

Convenience

Solar garden fountains are convenient as they require no cables from a power source and can be positioned some distance from the home. With remote panels they might even be positioned in under the trees or in gazebos.

Solar Fountains for Ponds

In addition some solar fountains are specially made for fish ponds and are also suitable as they do not necessitate power cords from the house. You could set them to float on the water or fix them in place with rocks or tied to fasten them.

Solar Fountain Safety

Solar fountains are environmentally friendly without poisonous emissions, no noise and no materials that can escape and be a hazard. Since there aren’t any wires they are harmless to pets and kids.

Conclusion

Fountains driven by solar energy are cheap to run, easy to look after and safer than fountains with wires. While they have the shortcoming of running disappointingly during the winter months they would be, however, an excellent addition to your garden.
